On Thursday, David Makhura, Gauteng Premier briefed the media on investigations by the Special Investigating Unit into allegations of procurement corruption in the province.
The ANC Gauteng MEC resolved that presidential spokesperson – Khusela Diko and Gauteng Health MEC – Bandile Masuku will be subjected to the Provincial Integrity Committee, for their part in a R125-million deal.
Both have been placed on a special leave of absence.
Jacob Mamabolo, Transport MEC will be acting in the position of Health MEC for the next four weeks.
Makhura stated during his address that using the open tender system, the province has had cleaner audit outcomes and seen positive results since 2014.
The premier admitted to some corruption in the provincial government but asserted it was never on the scale of the allegations being raised during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He further said the allegations of corruption have eroded public confidence in the government.
Mkhura reported 102 companies are currently being investigated by the Special Investigating Unit, but would not reveal the details of the companies.
He emphasised that the companies have not been accused of improper behaviour, but all will be scrutinised.
