13 police officers are to appear in court on Tuesday, 11 August 2020 on charges of corruption

The accused officers will also be issued letters of intention to suspend after their court appearance.

The 13 officers from Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) are expected to appear in court on Tuesday, 11 August 2020 on charges of corruption.

The police officers are aged between 32 and 57.

Some of the officials were arrested on 7, August 2020, in different parts of the capital, while others, on Tuesday.

Their arrests came after an 18-month investigation initiated by the RTMC’s national traffic anti-corruption unit assisted by Hawks, SAPS, Road Traffic Management Corporation and national road traffic enforcement, named Operation Bunny.

The corporation said the investigation was prompted by feedback from members of the public who were not pleased with the unprofessional conduct of some of the officers.

Chief of Police, Johanna Nkomo, said the accused officers will be be issued a suspension letter after their court appearance.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) also called for disciplinary action to be taken against the officers

“We are calling on the municipality to institute disciplinary measures to ensure that the people are held to account, and that does not have to wait for the criminal processes. We will be able to provide them with evidence that implicates the officials in wrongdoing”, said the corporation’s spokesperson Simon Zwane.

The RTMC said a strong message needed to be sent out indicating that corruption destroys lives and will not be tolerated within the law enforcement fraternity.
