A report was brought by Bloomberg that government and advisers from FirstRand’s Rand Merchant Bank had initiated negotiations after they received four promising proposals.

The Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) has begun talks with private entities that showed interest in South African Airways (SAA), which is currently in need of at least R10 billion to resume operations.

Kgathatso Tlhakudi, DPE director-general said:

The state hoped the repurposed airline would take off the ground by the end of the year, depending on the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Fogs still remain in air about which of the potential private entities showed interest in the troubled national airline.

The DPE made a statement sometime in July, he said:

All the conditions for the implementation of SAA’s business rescue plan had been met.”
