Metrorail said it has decided to reopen the Cape Flats line train services after it has consulted widely and checked all important hygiene measures.

It’s been five months since commuters from Heathfield, Athlone, Maitland, and Huisendal had to take other transport system because of the lockdown.

Train passengers in Cape Town will have smiles on their faces after Metrorail gave a go ahead for the Cape flats line.

It has to coincide with the opening of the school, we were listening to a lot of social media requests from the community of the Western Cape, they sincerely requested this line and we are introducing it today, and we are hopeful that in the next two weeks we will introduce the Cape Town to Kraaifontein line,” said Prasa Regional Manager Raymond Maseko.

Some commuters mentioned it took long for the Cape flats line to begin operations.

Only 12 trains will now begin operations on weekdays – 6:15am till 7:14pm.

We then did an assessment of the infrastructure that had been vandalized, and that’s when we decided to have this staggered plan of return. It’s not that we’re not fully responsive to the needs of the commuters, of central or commuters of north. It just shows the shear work that needs to be done in the different corridors,” Maseko said.

Prasa also said the capacity of the trains is can take up to 8,000 commuters daily.

Prasa concluded that its services will only be opened at the weekend for now.
