Just shortly after schools were reopened, a group of men burnt down an administration block in a school at Mpumalanga.

The Mpumalanga department of education said a group of men entered Chayaza Secondary school in Mkhuhlu in the Bushbuckridge local municipality on Saturday.

According to Mpumalanga education spokesperson, Jasper Zwane the security saw these men entering the school in the early hours of Saturday.

“The security alleged that these men went straight to the administration block, broke the windows and threw explosives inside the block, resulting in the burning down of the entire administration block,” Zwane said.

The motive behind this act remains unknown.

Zwane disclosed that the department had opened a case of arson with the police.

Since the start of lockdown in March, it has been reported that more than 150 schools in the province have been torched by criminals.

Mpumalanga education MEC Bonakele Majuba appealed to community members with information that can assist the police to arrest the arsonists to come forward and report to the necessary authorities.

He added that the department will send officials to the school on Monday to check out the damaged properties and also to give advise on the next line of action.
