President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Wednesday evening that the country is now capable of increasing testing for the coronavirus
The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) CEO – Professor Glenda Gray said on Thursday that an evidence was available to prove that up to 40% people in some communities do not know they had contracted COVID-19.
President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Wednesday evening that the country is now capable of increasing testing for the coronavirus.
Ramaphosa said there would be a start of a nationwide survey in order to help scientists have a better understanding of the number of people who were asymptomatic and might been exposed to the virus without their knowledge.
Dr Gray said that good immune responses to COVID-19 would be of benefit to the country at large.
“If people limit the amount of spread that can happen to the vulnerable population. So, it will be variable and what we have to do is to be very careful. There are some parts of the country that had a lot of exposure like healthcare workers.”
“Up to 40% of healthcare workers could have been exposed and have a good immune response. But that doesn’t mean everyone in the population will have the same immune response or the same background,” she said.
