Same-sex couple denied usage of wedding venue

on

Following the refusal of a wedding venue to host a same-sex couple wedding, the couples from Cape Town have requested for R2 million in damages for a charity of their choice.

As at last year, Beloftebos in Stanford refused to host the wedding of Sasha-Lee Heekes and Megan Watling at the venue.

The SA Human Rights Commission has tendered a case before the Equality Court, where the couple has also filed an intervening application.

If we accept it in this sphere, it wouldn’t be long before we would have to accept it in other spheres.”

If someone says they get away with it, others will say we can also refuse, and before long it will be restaurants, cafes, theatres, and hospitals,” said Watling.

Stanford farm owners have responded back by challenging the constitutionality of part of the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act.

The owners of the farm are saying they are not homophobic and visitation from gay people are welcome by them.

But due to religious reasons, they’ve decided not to host same-sex weddings.
