Reports suggested that Lieutenant-Colonel Charl Kinnear was close to solving a huge case before his death.

The huge case was about a “guns to gangs” syndicate which involved the police’s Central Firearms Registry (CFR).

The reports stated that Kinnear’s investigation, which beat that of many other detectives, was a threat to the criminal underworld and a corrupt police network.

It claimed that Kinnear colleagues are solving his murder case as they are looking into the possibility of Kinnear’s assassination linked to the CFR investigation.

The top detective was murdered in front of his house in Cape Town on September 18.

However, 39 year-old former professional rugby player, Zane Kilian was arrested on Thursday in connection with Kinnear’s murder.

He was charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder and the illegal interception of communications.

It was further reported that Kilian, who resides in Gauteng, was a debt collector for alleged underworld boss, Nafiz Modack.

Kinnear was allegedly investigating a case related to Modack who was arrested on gun-related fraud charges earlier this year.

16 people were later arrested including Modack and some police officers.

When questioned by the media, Modack confirmed that Kilian collected debts on his behalf but had no further relationship with him.

Modack also claimed that he had no hand in Kinnear’s death.
