President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasised the importance of increasing electricity generation capacity in South Africa.
In the president’s weekly newsletter, he discussed the country’s energy crisis and how the government plans to stabilise the situation, at least in the short-term.
The president said that with the current severe constraints on electricity, provision of new generation units to boost the electricity capacity will be prioritised by the government.
Bidding for the procurement of electricity including the renewable energy Independent Power Producer Programme will be on soon.
He however made it known that during the current energy crisis, an additional 2,000 megawatts of emergency power was urgently purchased to help the situation.
The licensing requirements for projects under one megawatt have been removed by the government in a bid to accommodate self-generating.
Also, draft amendments to regulations that will allow municipalities produce their own power from independent power producers will be gazetted very soon.
