Protesters cause blockage of roads in Joburg’s Lawley and Ennerdale areas

on

On Monday morning, a protest began in the south of Joburg, which led to the blockage of different roads, including the K43.

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) said there’s been blockage of several roads by protesters in Lawley, Lenasia south and Ennerdale.

The reason for their protest is because they want to occupy land in the area.

Wayne Minnaar from JMPD said that since midnight, officers have been putting efforts in driving away the demonstrators.

K43 and Old Lawley Road has been blocked with rocks and burning tyres and this is over allegations of what informal settlements will be removed… the protests are over a big area and there has been the throwing of rocks and pushing of tyres onto the K43.”
