Two out of the seven suspects who escaped from the Elliot Police Station’s holding cells three days ago are yet to be rearrested by the Eastern Cape police.

Over the past two days, the swift action of the police led to the re-arrest of five of the suspects.

It is understood that the escaped suspects allegedly overpowered the police officers who were on duty on Wednesday night.

They robbed the officers of a SAPS firearm before fleeing from the holding cells.

These escaped suspects were initially arrested for several crimes including attempted murder and assault.

The police spokesperson, Khaya Tonjeni said, “The suspects will appear in the Elliot Magistrates Court on Monday facing the respective charges they were arrested for; and a further charge of escaping from custody will be added.”

He also added that a manhunt has been launched for the other two suspects.

“Police are on the heels of the two escapees who are still at large.”
