When two men linked to the murder of Brendin Horner appeared in court on Tuesday morning, demonstrators outside the Senekal magistrate’s court in the Free State took their grief and anger to the next level.

The two suspects, Sekwetje Isaiah Mahlamba, 32, and Sekola Piet Matlaletsa, 44, appeared briefly in court today.

The duo were arrested by Senekal detectives on Saturday at Fateng tse Ntho in Paul Roux.

This was after Horner’s body was found badly beaten and tied to a pole in an open space on the De Rots farm on Friday.

Police spokesperson Brig Motantsi Makhele said the case was postponed to October 16 for a formal bail application.

According to him, an “unruly group” of farmers stormed the court building after the court proceedings and demanded that the suspects be handed over to them.

The group damaged court property while forcing their way to the cells.

He also added that a police van parked outside the court was overturned and burnt.

“Two shots were fired from this group but no-one was injured,” Makhele said.

However, he indicated that police had restored order.

“Thus far the situation is tense but under control.”
