Following the violent clash that happened after suspects appeared in court, Police Minister Bheki Cele was hopeful that more people get arrested in connection to the clash.
Two suspects appeared in Senekal Magistrates Court in the Free State in connection with the murder of a 22-year-old farm manager, Brendin Horner on Tuesday.
After the court appearance, angry farmers stormed the court’s building, vandalised the court’s properties and demanded that they handover the suspects to them.
Some demonstrators outside the building burnt a police van.
The police arrested a 52-year-old farmer for his role in the torching of the police vehicle.
Police minister was pleased with the arrest and called for more.
He also condemned going against the rule of law.
The minister’s spokesperson Lirandzu Themba in a statement said: “Police Minister Bheki Cele has welcomed the arrest of the first suspect involved in the violent demonstrations by a group of farmers outside the Senekal Magistrates Court.”
“Minister Cele is encouraged that a 52-year-old farmer has been arrested for his role in the alleged torching of the police vehicle”.
“Cele is calling for more arrests as it is clear the criminality that took place was a collective act that threatened the rule of law,” he said.
