A gardener was busy going about his usual routine on Saturday morning when he came about a mortar shell on the grounds of a Kloof home, outside Durban.
Police spokesperson Col Thembeka Mbele mentioned that the gardener discovered the mortar shell at around 11am.
“A gardener found an explosive device inside the premises on Kloof Falls Road while gardening.”
Mbele said the SAPS explosive unit received the alert about the device. A team was sent over to sweep the area in case there are other explosives present on the land.
Mbele said the explosive was transported to a remote area and detonated.
“No injuries were sustained,” she said.
Mortars have been in usage for hundreds of years, originally in siege warfare.
