Cape Town’s railway network has received an upgrade with the introduction of a new automated control centre in Bellville.
On Friday, October 16, the Bellville Rail Management and Traffic Control Centre (RM&TCC) was launched and is now the new control centre at Prasa’s operations headquarters.
Some of its functions will be:
- to see the automation of all passenger rail operations,
- improve on-time performance of passenger trains, as well as their safety.
- to co-ordinate and integrate the activities of Customer Services, Train Operations, Infrastructure, Rolling Stock, Protection Service, and Marketing & Communication departments.
The control centre costs R2 billion and brings a change from manual to automatic operations, especially when vandalism has an impact on Prasa’s ability to deliver services in the past.
TRAIN SIGNALING: from manual to Automatic.
The investment made to FIX PRASA are showing results. The automated signaling and control systems will make train service better and more efficient. More gas to be done to fix PRASA #FixingPRASA pic.twitter.com/GeCUUrP93S
