A KwaZulu-Natal man has received a sentence of 10 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to child pornography charges.

Last June, Jacobus de Wet forgot his mobile phone at a Ballito shop while he was busy delivering magazines.

Staff then tried to gain access to the phone so as to know the owner and that was when they discovered several images of children being indecently assaulted. After the discovery, they alerted the police.

Eventually, De Wet was tracked down and it was later known that he had two previous convictions – one for sexual grooming and the other for theft.

Along with the sentence, the court ordered that his name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders,” said Natasha Kara, the spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
