We all must eat fruits as a part of our daily diet intake because they are full of vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients for our body.

They also reduce the risk of strokes, diabetes, and cancer. A person who consumes fruits daily has a lower chance of falling sick as compared to others.

Even the doctors recommend to include fruits in your daily menu, but they always say no to drink water after eating fruits.

Have you ever wondered why our elders and doctors tell us not to drink water after consuming fruits? If yes, then we have reasons for that. Read on to know more.

1. It causes flatulence and cramps

Almost all fruits contain a large amount of sugar and yeast that needs to be digested properly. Our body produces different types of digestive juices to break down the complex food substances into simple subunits. The stomach produces hydrochloric acid that helps in breaking down the food, but if we drink water immediately after eating fruits, the water dilutes the acids and slows down the digestive process causing flatulence and cramps.

2. It can cause diarrhea

There are some fruits which have high water content, like watermelon and cucumber. If we eat them right, they make the bowel movements smoother, but if we drink water after them, it can cause loose motions as it speeds up the whole digestion process.

3. It disturbs the pH levels

Consuming water after eating fruits can disturb the pH levels of our digestive organs. The pH is used to specify the acidity or basicity of any liquid solution. The normal pH level of our stomach is acidic and ranges from 1.5 to 3.5. However, if we drink water right after eating fruits, it can dilute the overall acid levels causing weaker digestion.

4. It slows down the digestion process

Drinking water after eating fruits can slow down the overall digestion process, as it dilutes the gastric acids, leaving food undigested in the stomach. Sometimes, the undigested food can become toxic instead of giving nutrients, and thus result in stomach-issues.

5. It dilutes the gastric acids

Drinking water immediately after fruits can dilute the gastric juices, which decreases the secretion of digestive enzymes. These digestive enzymes help in breaking down the food inside your body. However, if the body doesn’t produce enough of these, we can suffer from heartburn or acidity. Experts advise us to drink water one hour after eating fruits to avoid any digestive issues.
