They say ‘Laughter is the best medicine’ but how many times do we actually follow that? Hardly, right?

However, studies have shown that your daily dose of laughter can help you to rejuvenate your skin. Too many negative emotions not only affect your body but also the appearance of your skin.

Mood is defined as your quality of feeling you have for minutes to hours, if you hold on to a negative feeling for long you’re all set for the damage by adding years to your skin age.

Even cosmetologists and wellness experts across the globe feel that your moods and outlook have the greatest impact on how you look, and how others perceive you.

Our skin is an immediate stress perceiver and a target of stress. Find out how your feelings leave their mark on your skin:

1. Anger

Next time when you get angry with your mother or your friend, just think about what damage it can cause to your skin. Anger makes your facial muscle tense and that over time leads to fine lines. Anger also affects the skin’s own rejuvenation and healing effect. People who get angry at the drop of a hat possess high intensity of cortisol hormones that inhibit the product of collagen, a crucial element of skin healing, and a cause of wrinkling when production slows.

2. Depression

The repeated frowning and furrowing brows when you’re depressed can cause wrinkles on your face. Our facial expression plays such an important role on your skin, that if you don’t have the ability to frown, you might actually feel less sadness. People, who are treated with antidepressants, were given Botox injections in their foreheads that prevented brow furrowing. Long-term depression has disastrous effects on skin, because the chemicals associated with the condition can prevent your body from repairing inflammation in cells.

3. Fear

When you feel threatened or in danger, the brain’s first reaction is to signal the adrenal glands to release epinephrine, better known as adrenaline. As a result, heart rate speed increases, rushing blood to the body’s big power muscles, in case you need the burst of energy to run fast. Adrenaline at times also takes away some of that blood from the skin and face, and constricts blood vessels in the skin to control and limit bleeding if wounded.

4. Stress

Skin connection has been studied for many many years. Psychological stress induced skin conditions can be easily prevented if you are aware and equipped with right tools. If you’re under stress then there are the chances that your face will age rapidly. Stress is one of the main reasons behind production of cortisol hormones, which in turn taxes every organ, blood vessels become more fragile, new skin cells don’t form as quickly, and cell turnover may eventually slow by half.

It has also been observed that when a person is going through stress then that chocolate bar, pack of salty potato chips look more tempting. Sometimes alcoholism takes over, this leading to the less consumption of water. Dehydration is the leading cause of many skin issues including wrinkles and fine lines.

What to do

In order to get rid of your various negative moods and skin issues, it’s important that we try to lead a healthy life. We need to keep ourselves well hydrated, follow a strict skin & daily routine and bid adieu to addictions like smoking and alcohol. Try to connect with people who have positive vibes. Exercise regularly because it helps to Endorphins, the happy hormones that primarily help one to deal with stress and reduce feelings of pain.
