Woman shares how she managed to graduate with an honours degree even after falling pregnant

A local woman has inspired many with her story as she shared how she managed to secure her degree.

Sharing the story, the young lady stated that she was not able to get her expected result but she is still grateful.

Yolisa Base said she ,matriculated in 2014 with 3 distinctions but she was disappointed with her marks in Mathematics and Physical Sciences.

She then decided to go to Midlands Community College in Nottingham Road to upgrade those marks in 2015.

“I matriculated in 2014 with 3 distinctions but I was not pleased with my Mathematics and Physical Sciences marks. In 2015 I decided to go to Midlands Community College in Nottingham Road to upgrade those marks. I did that successfully, I ugraded my Mathematics from 49% to 72% and in 2016 I got a place to study a BSc degree at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.”

Yolisa went on to say that in her second year, she fell pregnant and things became really difficult as she had to struggle academically.

“Mathematics and Physics in varsity became so pleasant because I could fully understand what was going on. In second year I fell pregnant then I started struggling academically because of the stress but by God’s grace I started going to our College psychologist where I got so much support.”

The lady revealed that therapy assisted her all through her pregnancy and when she gave birth in 2018.

With everything she passed through, she was able to complete her undergraduate degree and continued to complete my Honours in 2020

“Therapy assisted me immensely throughout my pregnancy till I gave birth. In 2018 I gave birth and passed all my modules. In 2019 I completed my undergraduate degree and continued to complete my Honours in 2020. I cannot stress enough the importance of taking care of your mental health as a student. If you do not everything falls apart. Students must utilize their school counseling facilities and stay focused.”-Yolisa Base
