Local man reflects on his struggles as he finally becomes a graduate

Mzansi man is overly excited as he becomes the first person to have a bachelor’s degree in his family.


The young man shared his story through Varsity World.

In his words, he stated that today is not an ordinary day for him as it is a day of celebration in which he made history.

Mlungisi Gumede went on to give an account of how he started his academic journey in 2014 and it has been a beautiful one for him.

“Today is not just a day but a joyful day, a day of celebration, a day in which history is made. Allow me to introduce new me to you. Starting from A to Z of my academic journey. Year 2014 was the start of my successful life. i remember that year I was doing my grade 10 and this was when I began a study group together with my classmates and many others joined me.”

Mlungisi went on to say that things became really difficult for him after he gained admission into all universities but he chose to study bachelor of education in history and Geography.

He was unable to register for his studies even though his mother and brother always give him R1000 to pay for rent and food.

“Without the bursary I studied from February 2017 to December, with the help of my dear Brother Nkosingiphile Gumede and My mother who were always giving me R1000 to pay for rent and food. And that 1000 was not enough for me to cover for my needs such as books, exercise books, pens, pencils, accommodation, clothes but I never gave up. i sometimes slept with an empty stomach.”

Mlungisi concluded as he celebrates for being the first person to have bachelor degree in the house of his great grandfather, the father of his grandfather.
