Behavioral psychology says punishment is to decrease unwanted behaviour in an individual and it turns negative when wanted behaviour also gets removed in the process.

When it is frequently imposed on a kid, the punishment starts getting negative. When it is applied consistently, the negative effect of punishment gets more effective.

Listed below are 6 negative punishment parent should avoid:

1. Grounding

Grounding a child for weeks and months is adversarial in nature, say psychologists. While parents think this would make them learn something, in most cases it results in the opposite.

2. Taking away access to favorite things

Many parents restrict the child to his or her favorite things in order to make them realise their mistake. With frequent occurrence of this, the child develops an alternate way to deal with this.

3. Shouting at child in public

Even if you are at the verge of losing all your patience, make sure not to shout at your kid in public places or in front of others.

4. Beating them for mistakes

A small restraint is okay, but regularly beating the child for committing mistakes is wrong. Parents should teach them and make them aware of the mistakes if they are doing it frequently.

5. Using abusive language

Many times parents lose their minds and shout at the kids using foul language. Kids are very quick in grasping new things. So, such mindless use of language may create problem when the child picks that language and starts using it.

6. Imposing stringent rules

Child’s mind is a blank slate. Whatever you write stays in it forever. Inculcating discipline in kids is good but pushing it to them may not always have a good consequence.
