4 habits that might worsen your stomach ulcer

After binging on spicy pizza or greasy onion rings, anyone can suffer from occasional indigestion resulting in acid reflux.

That’s the uncomfortable, sometimes painful condition when your stomach acid, and even food, creep back up into your esophagus.

But, if you find yourself reaching for an antacid all the time no matter what you eat, you likely need to re-evaluate your daily diet, and cut off some bad habits that might worsen your acid reflux.

In this article, we’ll be talking about habits you should avoid that may worsen your acid reflux.

1. Eating too much

The first thing to think about isn’t any specific food: It’s the amount you eat at one time. This is one case where bigger isn’t better. No matter what food you’re eating, how good it looks, or how much you like it, a stuffed stomach makes heartburn more likely. Try using smaller plates to help you trim your portions.

2. Eating dinner too late at night

Healthcare professionals often advise people with acid reflux to avoid eating within the 3 hours before they go to sleep. That’s because lying horizontally after a meal makes digestion more difficult, potentially worsening GERD symptoms.

3. Drinking alcohol

Drinking alcohol, especially red wine, especially in large quantities can increase the risk of acid reflux. Alcohol is another food that relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter, making it more likely for acid to flow into the esophagus.

4. Chewing peppermint gums

If you’re a fan of peppermint gum, you might want to stop chewing (or switch to a different flavor). Like caffeine, peppermint relaxes the sphincter muscle that keeps your stomach acid at bay. So anything you eat or drink that contains peppermint oil—teas, candies, and desserts could trigger your reflux.
