5 things you should consider when clearing out your closet

We can all admit that one of the hardest things to do is clearing your closet or in extreme cases doing an overhaul.

You can’t imagine parting ways with those clothes that probably cost you a fortune not to mention those souvenirs from friends and family.

But let’s be frank, how often do you put on these clothes or even just think about them when deciding on an outfit?

For some women clearing their closets is a no brainer but for most, this task can be exhausting and postponed for months. But why should we normalise overhauls?

For one, trends are not frozen and changing your clothes every six months will help you not look like a Neanderthal on the streets that get competitive by the day.

And besides new clothes keep you mysterious. When you put on the same old clothes every single day you get predictable and uninspired overtime.

So now, if you don’t know where to start, here are things you should consider when clearing out your closet:

1. Consider your needs

A lot of times ladies shop for clothes they find interesting rather than what they need. For instance, that dress you are eyeing, can you go with it to work or put it on without worrying about getting catcalled?

Having fancy clothes for those events is a must but don’t let them dictate your whole closet, you will end up spending a lot of money on clothes you will never wear.

2. Clear your closet in piles of three

Next, you want to divide your clothes in three different sections to help with the sorting. The first pile can be for donations, the second keeps and the third pile those you throw away.

If this doesn’t work, you might also consider selling some of your clothes, it wouldn’t hurt to make an extra buck from the clothes that cost you a fortune.

3. Try the six-month rule

If this method doesn’t work wonders, I don’t know what will. The six-month rule basically states that if you haven’t worn a cloth for six months then it needs to go.

Chances are, if in six months you haven’t had an outfit idea with this cloth, you never will. Toss it and move on.

4. Create a capsule wardrobe

The reason why you are probably struggling with your closet is because it lacks staple pieces. When you invest in a capsule wardrobe and not just trendy pieces, they are likely to serve you for years.

Also with a capsule wardrobe you will never lack an outfit or feel you don’t have clothes. They can be worn interchangeably and with most closet pieces.

5. Organize your closet per season

The thing about closets is we normally go with what we see first. Not unless you plan your outfits in advance, then you understand the struggle.

If its sunny for instance, ensure all your summer dresses and tops come first and all the others pushed back. This way you don’t have to rearrange your closet every other time and you can easily tell the pieces you need most.
