Every marriage is different and that’s because each person in a marriage is unique, and so is their relationship.
The issue of divorce is a very delicate, a path no couple wants to tread.
However, there are dynamics in marriage despite its longevity that may warrant the couple to part ways.
Here are some warning signs.
1. Lack of mutual respect and trust
Just as communication is vital to a relationship, so too is respect. Collective respect is a foundational element of a healthy marriage. If one partner doesn’t feel respected by the other, it can lead to feelings of isolation, abandonment, loneliness, and resentment. No one enjoys feeling any of these things – least of all when they feel them at home with their spouse.
Having an understanding, regardful, and trusting relationship with your partner is therefore vital.
2. Domestic abuse
Domestic violence can include both physical and emotional abuse. When a woman becomes a victim of one or both of these deciding when to divorce might be difficult. Between periods of serenity and peace, you may encounter episodes of abuse.
You may also be afraid of what your spouse will do to you or your children if you leave the marriage. When any type of domestic abuse occurs, divorce should be a serious consideration to protect oneself and one’s children.
3. Lack of Intimacy
Intimacy is like the glue that holds a marriage, so it’s only natural that it’s also one of the most important factors in keeping them together. But intimacy isn’t just about sex; it may also refer to a broad sense of closeness or liking for your partner.
If one party no longer seems interested in sex, snuggling, or simply spending peaceful time together, it could mean your marriage is losing its closeness.
Infidelity can be triggered by a lack of closeness, or it might be a symptom that is already occurring. When one person needs more closeness than the other, they may feel compelled to look for it elsewhere. Similarly, if they find intimacy with someone else, they may lose interest in their marriage.
4. Infidelity
Infidelity is a telltale sign that a marriage isn’t stable. It can, however, be a chance for spouses to rekindle their love and appreciation for one another. If this isn’t achievable due to the cheating spouse’s desire to move on from the marriage or the cheated spouse’s inability to move past the transgression, divorce may be the best option.
5. Financial Concerns
One of the most common causes of divorce is financial concerns.
Every family’s finances are different, however, problems with budgeting, spending, and even gambling can come up and cause a lot of issues and strain in a marriage.
If husband and wife can’t agree on how to spend or save money, divorce will become more likely as time passes.
6. Communication issues or lack of it
Effective communication is critical to the success of any marriage. Regardless of how well accepted this is, it doesn’t help a couple who is having communication issues.
Failure to communicate in a healthy manner may quickly ruin any marriage, whether it’s a refusal to express their feelings or “the hard things,” or the fact that attempting to do so always results in a meltdown.
7. The marriage is causing you distress
It’s possible that your cause for getting divorced is as basic as this: you’re unhappy in your relationship.
Experts say if your marriage is causing you (or your children) significant and continuing distress, it’s a solid enough reason to leave.
Research also shows that marital tension is linked to medical conditions. In fact, research has shown that couples who are under more marital tension have a faster deterioration in health than those who are in happy relationships.
Your emotional and physical health are important, so if it means leaving your marriage, so be it.
