It is one of the most loved foods in the world, and the more you travel around the world, the more variety of cheese you will find.
From inexpensive ones to gourmet cheese, there are hundreds of cheeses around the world that people consume with love.
However, when it comes to storing the cheeses, most people don’t know the ideal way of doing it.
Some store it in plastic wrap, others dip it in a solution or simply water to keep it fresh. These tips will help you keep your cheese fresh for as long as possible.
1. Save the date
2. Use a cheese paper/bag
3. Do not use a plastic wrap
It is the easiest way to wrap the cheese, but by doing so, you will be paving the way to ruin it. Storing in a plastic wrap makes the cheese breathe less which causes mould in it. Also, when you store it in plastic, the cheese starts taking on the properties of plastic which can be hazardous for your own health. Thus, one should avoid storing it in plastic wrap.
4. Use oil to prevent moulding
To prevent the mould on cheese, lightly brush the previously cut/sliced cheese with canola/olive oil and afterwards store in an airtight container. While doing so, even if the moulds do grow, they will do so on the oil and not the cheese which can be wiped off using a paper towel and the cheese could be saved.
5. Use wax or parchment paper for storing cheese
For those who cannot find cheese paper, wrap the leftover cheese in wax or parchment paper and then put it in a partially sealed plastic bag. Doing so will create a barrier between the cheese and the plastic, while the plastic keeps it from getting dry. If it’s pre-sliced, you can wrap the slices in paper and put them back in the original unclosed bag.
6. Replace the brine
In the case of fresh cheese such as cottage cheese, make sure that the brine is replaced every other day. It can help in keeping the cheese fresh for a very long time. Also, make sure that the utensil in which you have stored the cheese is changed within a 2 days time period, or there are high chances of contamination. To make this brine, all you need to do is mix 1 tbsp of salt in a cup of water and place the cheese in it.
