9 unusual uses of potatoes

Potato is like that friendly person that goes along with everyone as it can be paired with anything and everything.


It is the most loved vegetable and is available in all the seasons.

One will be surprised to know that apart from being used in cooking, potatoes can also be used in several interesting ways in our day-to-day lives.

1. ​Saves your soup

Potatoes come to your rescue when your soups turn too salty. Add some potatoes into your broth to extract the excess salt from the soup. Remove the potatoes in 10 minutes and voila! Your soup is saved.

2. Great for burns

Potato juice is actually good for healing burns. In fact, if the burns are severe, here is what you can do. Mash some boiled potatoes and mix it up with the juice, apply it all over your burns to reduce the pain and irritation. Keep switching the mixture from time to time and keep applying till pain subsides.

3. ​Thicken your gravy

The gravy turned out to be watery? No worries, finely mash boiled potatoes and add them into your curry. Mix it well to make your gravy thick enough for dinner.

4. ​Stain remover

Potatoes can make for a good stain removing agent. To get rid of wine or curry stains, you can simply grate some potatoes and put it in a bowl full of water. Take out the potatoes and apply the potato-soaked water over the stains. Keep on applying the water with a sponge or a cloth until the stains starts fading away. Rinse it off with cold running water and you are done!

5. Rust remover

Have rusty utensils stacked up? It gets very frustrating when rust stains refuse to leave. Here is what you can do to get rid of the metal rusts for once and for all. Mix some salt, detergent and baking soda. Chop the potato into a half and rub it into this mixture. Softly rub the potato over the rusty areas for a few minutes. Repeat this process for a while and then rinse it off with water after some time. And that’s it to make the rust vanish. The acid in the potato does the work like magic.

Tired of rinsing your silverware, trying to sparkle them up? Next time you boil potatoes, don’t throw away the water. Instead, use the water to remove tarnish or any kind of spots from your silverware to make them shine bright.
