5 foods that can silently trigger sleeplessness

Watching the walls, clocks and staring at the slightest details of the house while the whole world is asleep is a pain that haunts many.


But do you know ‘what you eat’ can also trigger this sleep disorder commonly known as insomnia.

Here are some common day-to-day foods that may silently trigger sleeplessness.

1. ​Spicy food

This may be bad news for spice lovers but eating fiery and spicy food right before sleeping can trigger an episode of insomnia. Eating spicy food can lead to acid formation in the stomach and lead to indigestion, heartburn and constipation in some cases, which disturbs the sleep pattern.

2. Excess fats

Excessive intake of saturated fats in the diet can also trigger insomnia and reduce the quality of sleep. As per a study, it was found that intake of high saturated fat during the day reduced sleep quality and affected night time sleep. Another research was linked to high fat intake, which led to frequent episodes of waking up at night.

3. ​Excess caffeine

Overconsumption of caffeine in coffee, tea can impact and block the brain’s receptors for adenosine, which is basically a chemical that promotes sleep. Caffeine boosts alertness and this can be one of the major triggers for insomnia, this is the reason why it is advised to avoid drinking coffee before bedtime.

4. Energy drinks

Sipping on aerated drinks or punchy drinks before bed time or around dinner can also affect sleep. This is because these thirst quenching drink are loaded with caffeine and sugar, which instantly boost energy levels and slowly disrupt the sleep cycle. Thus, avoid them at all costs if you suffer from Insomnia.
