Be it a cup of hot tea, coffee or even milk; cookies are one of the popular snacks consumed around the world.
They come in various shapes & sizes and offer a myriad of options to choose from!
Soft, crunchy, chewy, and mouth-watering, these cookies can have any kind of texture and have the perfect amount of sweetness in them.
Even the aroma of their baking itself is very satisfying. Even though we love to eat these cookies, do you know there are about 6-7 types of basic cookies that are baked around the world?
If you are a fan of baking cookies, here are some of the basic varieties that you must know about.

1. Dropped Cookies

It is the most common variety of cookies that are made by dropping the dough on the cooking sheet before being baked. If you are a novice in the cookie-baking area, then this is the one you must definitely try. However, make sure that you leave a space in between as the cookie dough spreads while getting baked. Some examples are Chocolate Chip Cookies and Oatmeal Cookies.

2. Bar Cookies

Just as their name implies, bar cookies are cookies readied and cut into bite-sized bars and sometimes bite-sized squares. Baked in a shallow pan, they can be firm or soft, depending on your preference. Also, they can have various bases, toppings, or fillings. A good example is the fudgy chocolate brownie cookies.

3. Moulded Cookies

Moulded Cookies are usually moulded into balls or wreaths before baking. The dough itself is stiffer than the dropped cookie. You need to mould it by yourself and keep your fingers or utensils lightly dusted with flour to keep the dough from sticking. Examples of moulded cookies are Peanut Butter Cookies, Almond Crescent, and Biscotti.

4. Rolled/Cutout Cookies

Rolled Cookie dough usually is stiffer and needs to be chilled first before you use it. After the dough is chilled, roll it out and cut it into shapes with a cookie cutter or with a knife. This kind of cookie is really fun to eat because of the unlimited variety of shapes. The Rolled Cookie example is Gingerbread.

5. Pressed Cookies

Pressed Cookie dough should be soft but firm enough to hold the cookie’s shape. If your dough is too soft, put it in the refrigerator to make it stiffer. If the dough is too stiff, add an egg yolk to make it softer. You should have the perfect dough to make this. Then you put your dough into a cookie press (cookie gun) or pastry tube into various decorative shapes. One of the best examples of these cookies is Spritz Cookie.

6. Sandwich Cookies

It can be rolled or pressed cookie for the dough and assembled as a sandwich for the final product. For the filling usually a sweet one, such as frosting, ganache, jam, marshmallow creme, and peanut buttercream. It can be a soft cookie with a filling or even a crisp cookie with a filling too! French Macaroons are the perfect example of this cookie type.

7. No-Bake Cookies

It is a “faux” cookie! You don’t need an oven to bake this type of cookie. Usually, this type of cookie uses candy bars or ready-made cookies. It’s a candy-cookie hybrid! Examples of No-Bake cookies are Rice Krispies Treats, Chocolate Peanut Butter Bars, Rum Balls, and many more. This type of cookie lately has been a trend to make by yourself because it is easy and does not require too many ingredients and tools.
