5 smart ways to increase the shelf life of fruits

We often buy fresh fruits and veggies in bulk to save time and efforts, but doing this increases the chances of fresh fruits rotting faster than usual.


Well, here are some smart hacks to save fresh fruits from spoiling and doing this will also increase the shelf life of the fruits.

​1. Tangy fruits

Tangy and treaty fruits have a better shelf life as compared to other fruits, It is best to keep them open in a cool and dry place. Keeping them in a fridge can reduce the water content to some extent, but helps in retaining the freshness for as long as a month.

2. Apples

Apples stay fresh for a week or less depending upon how you store them. The easiest hack is to pick apples that have no spots and store them in the refrigerator, this will not only help in retaining their freshness but also increase the shelf life for up to 15 days.

3. Pineapple

Cutting the pineapple and keeping them at normal room temperature can reduce the shelf life and spoil the taste and texture in just 3 days. But if you want to retain the crunchy and sweet texture, keep the cut pineapple in an airtight container and store in a deep freezer.

4. Bananas​

Bananas rot very easily because the process of ripening is fast and mostly starts rotting after 4-5 days maximum, which creates a mushy texture and blacking outer peel. Well, to increase the shelf life, cover the banana bunch head with a cling film and store in a dry place in the fridge, this will increase the shelf life of the bananas. Also while choosing bananas go for greenish bananas if you don’t want to eat them immediately.

5. ​Watermelon

Retaining freshness of watermelon after cutting them may seem like a tough task, but keeping it in the right way can help you enjoy it for at least 4-7 days. Right after cutting a portion, cover the remaining watermelon with a cling film and store in an airtight container, keep it in a fridge or freezer to increase shelf life.
