It’s been years since the coronavirus pandemic hit us, forcing businesses and industries to shut down their offices and continue remote working for the time being.
The experience of remote working is still quite new as many employees are yet to settle down with the idea.
And so, many end up making mistakes while working remotely that unknowingly affects their work productivity.
So, we bring to you some of the biggest don’ts while working remotely.
1. Don’t work from your bed or couch
While working remotely, you can work very comfortably in the warmth of your home. While that is true, employees end up plopping on their beds or couch and start working on their laptops without analysing how harmful that can be for their physical and mental health. Your work suffers as you may crouch and work, affecting your posture. So, while working remotely, invest in a simple desk and chair to avoid working in a relaxing tone on the bed or couch.
2. Don’t forget to communicate with your team
Working separately can be tiring, as there can be a lack of fluent communication. Remote working increases chances of miscommunication and employees may also feel neglected. So, team managers should ensure there is sufficient communication via text messages, audio or video calls to know assignment, project statuses, employees’ work productivity and if they have been facing any problems etc. A casual update once in a while ensures a good work relationship with your colleagues.
3. Don’t forget to create boundaries
There will always be other work and distractions in the house while working remotely. Hence, it’s essential to maintain a work structure even in your home, i.e create a work to-do list, stay within a specific part of the house where no one can disturb you, and create boundaries about interacting while you are amidst your work hours. This helps you stay focused on your work and not get distracted by the other things in your house.
4. Don’t neglect your health
When you’re rooted to that one space in your home while working, you don’t indulge in the small physical activities that you were used to doing in the office, like walking from one desk or conference hall to another, walking to the cafeteria etc. Instead, at home, you’ll find yourself with constant back pains, numbness in your legs and more. To not be surprised, some even forget to have their lunch! This is extremely necessary that you take care of your health while working because it should always be your first priority regardless of the pressure at work.
5. Don’t forget to upgrade your overall skills
With its many cons, remote working can actually be beneficial for an employee as well. You can utilise this opportunity by upgrading your written and verbal communication skills, learn more about technical apps that can make work easier and more. After communicating with texts and calls, you should also be able to develop a sense of tones and awareness about an employee’s mood-if they are feeling stressed low. To sum up, don’t take this time for granted and only work on the assigned projects, but also heighten your overall skills necessary for remote working.
6. Lastly, don’t wear pyjamas when working
The most productive and successful people never wear pyjamas while working remotely. Wearing your usual work suit and attaining a fresh look for the day, before you start working will give you the right mindset and the attitude. Even though many find it really difficult to follow this routine, one should anyways try to achieve this well-groomed, presentable appearance while working at home. It’ll give you the same office vibes, even at home.
