Grocery shopping is usually a fun activity that involves stocking the pantry with food and other household supplies that are required on a daily basis.


But it can be a daunting task, especially if you don’t have a clear plan or budget in mind.

To make the most of your shopping experience, it’s important to prepare a list of items you need and to stick to a budget.

Here are six tips that will make grocery shopping more productive and useful.

1. Make weekly plans

It is best to make weekly trips to your favourite grocery store and collect all the items as per need. Keep a notepad in your kitchen and note down all the ingredients that you need to buy on your next shopping trip. This list will not only help you keep track of the items that are needed in the kitchen but will also help in budgeting the shopping trips in a better way.

2. Always read labels

Inculcate the habit of reading labels during your grocery shopping. Labels carry some vital information that can be quite useful. Most important information like the manufacturing date and expiry date should be your first concern. Next, you must glance through the ingredients of the packet. If you are allergic to certain ingredients, then nutritional labels can help you in identifying those particular ingredients.

3. Seasonal produce

Instead of opting for frozen food and off-seasonal expensive fruits and vegetables, buy fresh and seasonal produce. Be it summer or winter, there are fruits and vegetables that are specific to each season. Eating fresh and seasonal foods will give all the essential nutrients that are needed by the body. On the other hand, frozen foods in cold storage often lose their vital nutrients while going through the process of storage and shouldn’t be your first choice while shopping.

4. Don’t hoard perishable items

Buying perishable items in bulk can lead to the wastage of food. Always make sure that you buy perishable items in small quantities, so that they are consumed before their expiry date. Some examples of perishable food items are- milk, curd, paneer, butter, fruits, vegetables and freshly baked items like bread, cakes, cookies etc

5. Items to buy in bulk

Just like perishable items should never be bought in bulk, there are several items that you can buy in bulk. Usually shopping stores and marts that schemes in which you get a hefty discount if you buy items in bulk. Such discounts are usually applicable on shampoos, body lotions, handwashing soap, detergents, rice, pulses, sugar etc. These items have a long shelf life and can be safely bought in bulk to avail big discounts.

6. Use your own carry bags

Always be a responsible shopper and carry your own cloth bags while shopping. Grocery stores usually deliver the items in multiple plastic bags, which only adds to the waste. Keep designated cloth or jute bags for shopping purposes and carry them whenever you are heading out for shopping. Make sure your shopping bag is sturdy and is capable of carrying weight.​
