Stepping in a gym is an anxiety-inducing phenomenon, especially for a beginner. It is quite challenging to gather courage and go to the gym every day.
We all are well aware that a lot of us do get a membership of the gym but never go there for a workout stating that we are too busy. But the reality is something else.
As per a recent research, a major chunk of women population across the world avoid going to the gym for the fear of being judged.
They are constantly swamped with questions in their head if they are working out right, or if people are staring at her, or if she is sweating a lot.
Their minds struggle to find answers to millions of questions whenever they enter a gym. If you among those who feel intimidated while walking into the gym, then relax because you are not alone in it.
According to a new survey, gymtimidation (the fear of going to the gym thinking that everyone is judging them) keeps a shocking number of women at home.
What the study says
You’d be surprised to know that about 65 percent of women avoid the gym for the fear of being judged, while only 36 percent of men are affected by it. This survey was conducted on 1,000 people across the U.S. About 55 percent of women feel they are being judged for not looking fit enough, 49 percent worry about their workout clothes, and 25 percent fear being stereotyped.
The solution
Here are a few things you can do to keep your fear at bay.
1. Plan your workout beforehand
Before walking into the gym, plan what you are going to do there. This way you feel more confident and comfortable.
2. Practice at home
People often fear doing the workout improperly. In such a case, perfect your form at home to feel more confident.
3. Know your equipment
It is quite obvious that not all gym equipment is the same. So, if you don’t know how to use a piece of equipment, ask a trainer.
4. Report harassment
If you feel that you are being harassed at your gym then report about it to the management immediately.
5. Remember your goals
Stay focused and remember why you are going to the gym in the first place. Once you will start enjoying it, it won’t feel like a big task.
