5 things to avoid after quitting your old workplace

By

on

Resigning from your workplace and moving on is part and parcel of a healthy professional life and mental well being as well.

It does feel like an era has ended and you tend to feel a little guilty but that is how it always is.

However, some people tend to make a few mistakes in rage or hate which must be avoided.

Here are 5 things you must not do when quitting a job and there are good reasons for the same whether you like it or not.

1. Burning the bridge

This is an advice all seniors give to their juniors. It is very tempting to cut off old connections but you never know when you might bump into them especially if you are in the same industry. You may even end up working with them in the same organisation. If nothing else, old contacts at times come in very handy. Don’t do something you might regret later.

2. Don’t forget “thank you”

The two words never hurt. You do not have to make a speech if you are not very good with words. You can keep it crisp and simply say “Thank You” for everything. Be sincere and to the point.

3. Bad mouthing your company

Once you have resigned, you may notice a few things you had not before. You tend to see things which had not and are not working especially when you are soon to step out of that office. However, keep it to yourself. It is just you who is leaving, rest are still working there.

4. Talking trash about co-workers

Just like your company, you must refrain from talking ill of your soon to be ex co-workers as well. Not your subordinates, not your boss, NO ONE! Keep them to yourself. You will not get anything out of this gossip. Let people make their own impressions on others. Share it outside the office or with friends who can retain that information (in case you can’t stomach it).

5. Never lose touch

You once worked together, braved the ups and downs so why lose touch? You cared about them so why let it go? Just because you are leaving does not mean that you lose touch with the people you worked with and spent time with. It takes a little effort but atleast for professional reasons if not personal, stay in touch.
