Before you try to think this through, there are experts who say, lying is very common in relationships.
Although, this doesn’t mean that there are lies that are potentially damaging for your relationship.
It actually depends on the lie and why you’re telling it in the first place. Don’t settle for the fact that lying is common in relationships.
It is very crucial to know that while white lies happen often between a couple, the bigger lies aren’t as common.
Every couple experiences a situation where they must have caught their partner lying to them and it all goes down there onwards.
This is when you should know how and when you should admit to your lie to your partner.
1. Confess before you get called out
When you know you have lied to your partner about something, don’t just wait for your partner to call you out someday and then accept the lie. Instead, put on the big girl pants and get real with them about why you told the lie in the first place. Take responsibility as it is a very important element of empathy and self-reflection.
2. Start your statements with “I”
Make sure you always and always start your sentences with “I” and no other word. Something like, “I was not honest with you” or “I’m sorry that I did this”. Don’t even think about blaming your partner in this and making your lie look like your partner did something wrong which is why you chose to lie. That’s simply gaslighting your partner and will double down on your lie.
3. Tell the truth when you get caught lying
When you kept a secret from your partner by lying to them about it and if they managed to find out that you did, don’t go around the bush and add more content to your lie to make it a bigger lie. Accept it and tell them the truth instead. Don’t put your partner’s trust at stake as it will only affect the relationship in the longer run.
4. Try to make it right
When you accept your lie to your partner, ask them how they felt and what should you do to make things better. It is essential to talk to your partner in order to understand how and why they lost their trust in you and word towards gaining that trust back.
5. Be patient
One you get caught with a lie and you made up for it, you might have to talk about it more than once. You wouldn’t know the kind of damage that one lie of yours would have done to your partner’s mind. And so, be patient each time they bring it up and treat that conversation with utmost love and care. This will show you are truly sorry for telling a lie and you are here to make it right each time.
