Usually there is a weird taste in your mouth after eating any potent foods like garlic and onions.

Other times, poor oral hygiene or dental health issues may be responsible for bad breath and bad taste.

However, did you know that there are multiple kinds of tastes in your mouth, and experiencing them suddenly and significantly could be a sign of an underlying disease.

In fact, different diseases can contribute to different kinds of tastes in your mouth. Instead of ignoring these, it is best to consult your doctor to find the root cause behind this change.

Here are five tastes that may be signaling something is wrong with your health, according to health experts.

1. Bitter taste

Experiencing a bitter taste in your mouth can be caused by many health issues. These include liver or gallbladder problems and GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). Other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and fatigue may also accompany the bitter taste. It is important to consult your doctor for the correct diagnosis and treatment. Some people also experience a bitter taste in their mouth due to hormonal changes, poor oral health, medication use and stress.

2. Metallic taste

A metallic taste in your mouth may be caused by gum disease or infection, or any other medical condition such as kidney disease, liver disease, or diabetes. Some people also have a metallic taste in their mouth in case of heartburn, acid reflux, and indigestion. Common symptoms that one may experience alongside a metallic taste in their mouth include a decreased sense of taste or smell, dry mouth, or changes in appetite.

3. Sweet taste

If you have diabetes and your body is struggling to regulate blood sugar, then high levels of glucose may be causing a sweet taste in the mouth. Symptoms you experience with this taste include increased thirst, frequent urination, and blurred vision.

4. Sour taste

When your stomach acid backs up into the esophagus, it can leave behind a sour, unpleasant taste in your mouth. This happens due to acid reflux or GERD. Sour taste can also be caused by other health problems such as nutritional deficiency, infections and nerve disorders.

5. Salty taste

If you are dehydrated, your body may be trying to conserve water by producing less saliva, leaving a salty taste in your mouth. This may also lead to more symptoms alongside the salty taste, such as a dry mouth, thirst, fatigue, and muscle weakness.
