Being pregnant and sick at the same time can be a worrisome experience.

Getting the pregnancy blues and sickness together isn’t just uncomfortable but also concerning, especially for the mother.

During pregnancy, as the immune system undergoes changes, expectant mothers are more prone to illnesses. Colds, flu, anxiety, panic and UTI’s can be particularly challenging during this period.

But, it is necessary to exercise caution before taking medicines for the sickness. Not all medicines are safe for the developing baby and here we list a few to avoid during your pregnancy.

1. Aspirin

The most commonly used pain reliever and anti-inflammatory medication, Aspirin can be found in everybody’s cabinets. While it is generally safe for most adults, it is not recommended during pregnancy, especially during the later stages. Aspirin can increase the risk of bleeding and can have adverse effects on the baby’s development. It can lead to issues such as a low birth weight as well as complications during delivery. Pregnant women should always consult their doctors before taking any pain relievers.

2. Ibuprofen

Similar to Aspirin, Ibuprofen is also a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is often used to alleviate pain, fever and reduce inflammation. Ibuprofen can also be harmful during pregnancy, particularly in the later stages as it may affect the development of the baby’s heart, kidneys and lungs. It can also increase the risk of complications during labor and delivery and thus pregnant women are advised to consult their doctors before taking Ibuprofen.

3. Lithium pills

Lithium pills are used to treat bipolar disorder, depression and serious psychological issues. However, it is considered unsafe during pregnancy, as it has been associated with an increased risk of congenital heart defects in babies exposed to the medication in utero. Usually, pregnant women with psychological illnesses are given alternative medicines to treat their symptoms and it is best to consult your doctor before taking any medications.

4. Xanax

Used to treat anxiety and panic disorders, Xanax is another medicine that should be avoided during pregnancy. Xanax is one of the medications which can cross the placenta and affect the developing baby’s central nervous system. Babies exposed to Xanax may experience withdrawal symptoms after birth. It is thus important for expecting mothers to discuss alternate medicines with their doctors to manage anxiety or panic symptoms.
