3 pasta sauces kids will love

There are so many reasons pasta should make an appearance on your kid’s meal plan at least once a week.

For one, it’s easy for little ones to feed themselves – whether they’re perfecting their pincer grasp or learning to use a fork.

For another, pasta is so versatile and there’s a pasta shape that’s perfect for every sauce. It’s also a great way to offer a range of nutrients in one meal.

Ready to add pasta to your monthly rotation? Here are three pasta sauces that will offer versatility, nutrients and, most importantly, deliciousness!

1. Bolognese sauce

Of course, spaghetti Bolognese has to be on the list! While the authentic Italian version includes red wine and a mix of minced beef and pork, leave out the wine for tiny tummies and use any combination of minced meat that you have available. You could even forgo the meat altogether and use aubergine or lentils instead.

You can also add any grated vegetables you have on hand. Courgettes and carrots work very well. Or you can add chopped spinach, red pepper or mushrooms.

2. Pesto

The classic basil pesto is packed with flavour and nutrients! But you can use whatever herbs, nuts and even cheese you have available. Substitute sunflower seeds for pine nuts for a more affordable pesto. Rocket adds a lovely pepperiness and pairs well with walnuts.

You can even add additional ingredients to up the nutritional value even more. Avocado makes for a deliciously creamy pesto and helps if you’re short on basil. Or use sun-dried tomatoes and olives or red pepper and tomatoes instead of basil.

 3. Creamy butternut sauce

Butternut sauce is a lovely creamy sauce the little ones will love, and you can add any other vegetables or protein you have at hand. If you have time, roast the butternut with garlic, onion and some herbs such as thyme before blending it into a sauce. Sage also goes particularly well with butternut – fry some leaves in butter and drizzle the sage butter over the pasta before serving. You can also add carrots and red pepper (both pre-roasted if you want).

For added creaminess, include a splash of cream, or if you prefer a plant-based option, loosen the sauce with coconut cream or vegetable stock instead.

Of course, cheese is a must with butternut pasta as well. Grate some Parmesan or even cheddar cheese on top, or fold in some salty feta, before serving.
