Parents, do not underestimate the power of your loving touch when it comes to your baby’s communication, development and learning.

Before the tiny tots learn to speak, they tend to interact by touching everything around them.

Hence, massaging is one of the most effective ways of communicating with the little one until the time he/she learns to speak.

What is a baby massage

Massaging your little one includes stroking his/her body gently with oils or moisturisers. It is important to only perform the massage when your baby is content and comfortable. Your calming touch will not only soothe the baby but also make him feel warm and loved. Here are 4 advantages of massaging your baby:

1. Digestive relief

When you massage your little one, it will also provide relief from constipation and trapped wind. It aids digestion and helps relieve colic and gas.

2. Improved weight gain

When you massage the abdominal area of the baby correctly, in addition to improving his/her digestion, it also aids healthy weight gain. Various studies have demonstrated that massaging the little one can facilitate weight gain.

3. Helps the baby relax

If your baby seems fussy and irritable lately, it is advised to give him a soothing massage to calm him/her down. This happens because massaging aids the release ‘feel-good’ hormone in the little one which can help the tiny tot feel more relaxed.

4. You understand your baby better

When you spend some alone time with your little one, you understand the cues in a better manner. You learn to handle him/her better and recognise what the little one’s needs.

What is the best time to massage your baby

Make sure you do not massage the baby at least 45 minutes after feeding. Pick a time in between feeds, when he/she is comfortable and not too full. Try to maintain a regular routine so that the little one gets in the habit of getting a massage at a regular interval of time. It is important to find a clean, ventilated environment where nobody will disturb you both.

Here is a list of things you need to prepare for the massage:

1.A gentle oil or cream

2.Clean sheets and towels

3.Diaper (just in case)

Also, make sure that your nails are trimmed, so that you don’t accidentally hurt the little one.
