As per a recent study published in the journal BMJ Open Heart, drinking heavily espresso coffee can result in higher cholesterol and particularly among men.
There have been several studies in the past on coffee that have naturally occurring chemicals with higher levels of cholesterol in the blood, which further causes heart problems including a stroke.
The study
Researchers from the Arctic University of Norway, the University of Oslo, and the University of Gothenburg in Sweden looked at survey data from 21,083 Norwegians, aged 40 and up, comparing coffee drinking habits with cholesterol levels from blood samples. The researchers wanted to find out how different types of coffee might affect cholesterol levels.
The findings
After a lot of research, researchers found that those who drank 3-5 cups of espresso per day had elevated cholesterol levels, compared to those who didn’t drink espresso at all. The link between espresso and cholesterol was stronger for men than women, according to the data.
On the other hand, they found out that the women who drank 6 or more cups of filtered coffee daily had higher cholesterol levels than men. Also, drinking six cups of plunger coffee such as French press daily was linked to higher cholesterol, regardless of gender.
Conclusion
Previously, there have been several studies which prove that drinking up to 5 coffees a day is considered safe and may have health benefits. This new study does raise questions on the drinking limit of coffee. But, more studies are needed to prove the fact that coffee may/may not be a healthy drink. But, as we always say that any drink should be had in moderation, be it coffee/tea or even alcohol.
