Bunny Chow: The interesting history behind the street snack and how it got its name

If you’ve ever been to South Africa, especially Durban, you might have tasted the uniquely South African street food called Bunny Chow — a hollowed-out loaf of bread filled with spicy curry.

But beyond its deliciousness lies an intriguing story that blends culture, history, and creativity.

Origins in Durban’s Indian community

Bunny Chow originated in Durban in the early 20th century among the Indian immigrant community. Many Indians were brought to South Africa as laborers, primarily to work on sugar plantations. They brought with them rich culinary traditions, especially various types of curries.

Due to social and economic restrictions during apartheid and earlier segregation, Indian workers had limited access to proper dining facilities and cutlery. Vendors and cooks found a practical solution: hollow out a loaf of white bread and fill it with curry. This portable, no-fuss meal was perfect for workers who needed a quick, filling lunch.

Why the name “Bunny Chow”?

Despite the name, Bunny Chow contains no rabbit meat. The name likely comes from a local slang twist on “Bania,” a caste of Indian merchants who ran food shops and canteens in Durban. “Chow” is South African slang for food. Over time, “Bania’s Chow” evolved into “Bunny Chow.”

The dish today

Originally, Bunny Chow was vegetarian, often filled with bean curry. Today, it comes with a variety of fillings, such as lamb, chicken, mutton, or minced meat curries. Served with simple accompaniments like grated carrot salad, it remains a beloved street food — messy, hearty, and full of flavor.

A symbol of resilience and fusion

Bunny Chow is more than just a snack; it’s a symbol of cultural fusion and resilience. Born out of necessity during difficult times, it has become a culinary icon representing South Africa’s diverse heritage.

Next time you enjoy a Bunny Chow, remember — you’re tasting a piece of South African history, wrapped in a loaf of bread.
