A tragic incident involving a young learner from Mthatha in the Eastern Cape has sparked widespread grief and anger on social media after reports emerged that she had endured persistent bullying from classmates.
According to reports circulating online, the Grade 3 pupil, identified as Imibongo Ntamehlo, had allegedly been subjected to repeated teasing and humiliation at school.
The children were said to mock her family’s living conditions, reportedly laughing at what they described as her “ugly home.”
She was also allegedly ridiculed for not bringing a lunchbox to school, with some classmates targeting her because of her family’s financial struggles.
It is understood that the young learner had raised concerns about the teasing, but the bullying reportedly continued.
The heartbreaking story gained attention after popular X user Am_Blujay shared details of the incident on the platform, along with a photo of the pupil.
The post quickly went viral, attracting more than 140,000 views and sparking emotional reactions from users across the country.
Many social media users expressed shock and frustration, questioning how a child so young could have been exposed to such distress.
“A Grade 3 learner. Let that sink in. Where were the teachers? Where were the anti-bullying policies we always hear about? This wasn’t just kids being kids, this was a systemic failure that cost a life. Heads need to roll for this,” one user wrote.
Others raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and called for further investigation.
“Uhm this story needs further investigations how does a grade 3 know about taking their own life,” another user commented.
Some simply shared their grief over the loss of such a young life.
“Absolutely painful, it should have never ended this way for the little Princess. My heart bleeds,” another user wrote.
