Prince Kaybee says music awards “don’t mean anything” after Zee Nxumalo’s Metro FM loss

Prince Kaybee explains the irrelevance of Music Awards to artists
South African DJ and producer Prince Kaybee has sparked debate online after sharing his views on the value of music awards following the Metro FM Music Awards 2026.
The hitmaker weighed in after rising star Zee Nxumalo walked away without a win despite scoring seven nominations at the ceremony.
Responding to the outcome, Prince Kaybee offered words of encouragement while making it clear that awards should not define an artist’s success.
“Those things don’t mean anything. GET TO WORK!” he wrote.
After an X user questioned his stance, the producer went on to explain his reasoning in more detail, drawing a comparison between the music industry and business principles.
“There’s something called ‘External Dependency’… a term used in business where a project task is reliant on factors outside the direct control of the project team,” he explained.
According to Prince Kaybee, artists should not rely on awards for validation, as their success ultimately lies in the music they create.
He argued that the relationship between artists and award shows is uneven, with awards depending more on musicians than the other way around.
“I believe music and awards are two entities in a relationship… the music (the artist) shouldn’t suffer from ‘External Dependency’ because the reason why we have awards is because of the artist,” he said.
He went further to claim that award ceremonies rely heavily on artists to remain relevant.
“In this case the awards lost and Zee Nxumalo won because should Zee and other artists stop releasing music, the Metro FM awards and all its hosts are dead!” he added.
Yeah sure lets talk about it…
