Cassper Nyovest warns AI music could hurt emerging artists after Suka! tops charts

Cassper Nyovest on AI-generated music
Cassper Nyovest has weighed in on the growing influence of artificial intelligence in music, praising its innovation while warning that it could make life harder for artists trying to break into the industry.
The rapper shared his thoughts amid the buzz around Suka!, an AI-generated song by former podcaster Rea Gopane that has taken streaming platforms by storm.
The track has racked up thousands of monthly listeners and recently climbed to number one on Apple Music South Africa’s Top 100, reigniting debate around AI’s role in creative spaces.
Cassper admitted the song impressed him, revealing that he initially believed it was the work of a new, undiscovered musician.
“It fooled me, and I’m a professional musician,” he said. “One of the things that’s exciting about music is discovering new music and new artists.”
However, that moment of surprise quickly turned into concern. Cassper explained that while established artists are unlikely to feel the immediate impact, newcomers could be the ones who suffer the most.
“I don’t think it’s a threat to people who are established. We’re good, but I really see it being a problem for new artists trying to break into the market,” he said.
He went on to suggest that the real danger lies in how the technology might be used by powerful players in the industry.
“If they can make music like that consistently, it’s a problem, because I feel like AI music might be powered by record labels that don’t want to pay and deal with artists anymore,” Cassper added.
