Farmers in in parts of the Free State and the Northern Cape need help urgently as they are faced with attacks of wildfire which affects productivity.
This call for help was made by AgriSA.
The parliament’s agriculture committee made an open call to the government to declare the regions in the two provinces disaster areas.
According to the committee, so many farms in areas like Hertzogville, Hoopstad and Bultfontein had been destroyed by fire.
Agri SA spokesperson, Christo van der Rheede agreed with the proposed declarations.
He said “the fires were absolutely devastating. Farmers have lost cattle and a range of other types of livestock and in addition to that, they have also lost their homesteads.”
Van Der Rheede is also using this medium to seek financial support:
“AgriSA has already made funding available to the tune of R300,000 and we call on the boarder public out there to support AgriSA’s campaign to support those farmers in need.”
However, an assessment to determine the extent of the damage is ongoing:
“Thousands of hectares of agricultural land has been destroyed,” fires are still burning.
