AKA – Why Young South African Rappers Don’t Find Success

on

AKA in his characteristic self took to social media to throw shots at the entire South African rap clout while also directly attacking his popular industry foe, you know who.

The rapper said the reason why young hip hop cats don’t find success is because they lack authenticity. He wrote on Instagram,

“I think the reason why a lot of artists don’t find success, is because they don’t sound authentic. There’s too much cut and paste going on right now, especially from the younger guys. Now listen, I love trap music .. and it’s impossible to say that I am not influenced by music from overseas, in fact from all around the world, and many different genres, but the key is to retain your identity and energy and closeness to your people and their vibe …. while combining all those elements of influence. Let me tell you why this album is so big right now. It’s solely for one reason … it is the most SOUTH AFRICAN ALBUM I HAVE EVER MADE”

He also had a word or two for the rappers coming after him, presumably Shane Eagle. AKA says rappers should take responsibility for their identity and quit undoing his previous work. “To the artists coming up after me, PLEASE, you have a responsibility to retain your national identity in your music … if you don’t, you are just fucking it up for the future of our people and undoing all my hard work, OUR hard work … Brenda Fassie, TKZee, HHP, Abdullah Ibrahim,Teargas, Caiphus Semenya, Stimela to name a few,” he added in the post
