Government’s alcohol, tobacco ban tweet befuddles SA

on

The tweet which was sent out around midday on Wednesday on the government’s primary Twitter account said cigarette and alcohol sales will remain banned as long as South Africa is in lockdown.

Then, at about 5pm, GCIS (Government Communication and Information System) said this was an error.

It meant to point out that the alcohol and cigarette ban was in place for lockdown level 3.

The alcohol ban alone is said to put one million jobs at stake.

On the tax front, advisory group Mazars said that if both the tobacco and alcohol bans are upheld until the end of the year, total losses could reach R30 billion.
