Two brothers and a man have been arrested by the police.
Guateng police discovered a human head in a septic tank on a smallholding in Putfontein, Benoni.
This led to the arrest of two brothers. 19 firearms were also seized at several locations in the area this week.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Mathapelo Peters said the police opened an inquest docket in May this year after a badly burnt body of an unknown man was found in Putfontein.
Around that time, a family reported a missing person to the police and the family and officers were able to confirm that the badly burnt body was that of the missing person.
There was also an evident gunshot wound on the body. A murder case was opened for further investigation.
Subsequently, investigations led them to a deceased landlord and revealed that the landlord could also be linked to the man’s murder. His smallholdings were thoroughly searched.
On Sunday, police went to the landlord’s smallholding property and found one illegal firearm and multiple rounds of ammunition.
On Tuesday, police followed more leads and found five illegal firearms and ammunition at another location in Benoni.
On the same day, police went to another smallholding in Putfontein and searched the property.
“Six more firearms and ammunition were found, one of which was illegal; while a further search led police to a septic tank in which a human head was found,” Peters said.
A murder case was opened and the two suspects who are brothers were arrested for murder and for possession of illegal firearm and ammunition.
They appeared in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. They were both denied bail and the case was remanded to 13th of August.
