Cape Town fire outbreak kills 2-year-old

In a fire outbreak that gutted out in an informal structure in Gugulethu Cape Town, a toddler who was stuck in the house got burnt to death.

According to the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service, they received an emergency call at 3.35am on Tuesday.


They immediately responded to the call. They arrived the fire scene which was in informal structure in Skweza Street on NY 82.

“A search led to the discovery of the two-year-old girl’s body among the debris while the other two children were found by the neighbors,” said Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Jermaine Carelse.

The other two children aged nine and a boy aged 12 were able to escape from the fire.

Bystanders who noticed that the two-year-old was missing called the attention of the rescue officers which led to her body being found.

Carelse said the fire was doused at 4.20am.

However, Police spokesperson, Mihlali Majikela said the police have opened a death inquest docket for further investigation.

The main cause of the fire is not known yet.
