The strike was initiated due to response of civil society against the unabated corruption evolving in public and private sectors which has in turn depleted economic growth
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) said mobilisation had begun from the society concerning the mass protests set to kick off for 7 October.
This followed the announcement that it will begin a general strike in opposition to corruption in the country.
However, the strike was initiated due to response of civil society against the unabated corruption evolving in public and private sectors which has in turn depleted economic growth.
The union also mentioned that COVID-19 will never be a barrier for them in carrying on with the strike.
Cosatu general secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali said:
“We have noted the calls by President Ramaphosa to push back corruption, but we can only judge the result and not the intention. Aggressive intervention is the only dependent vaccine to cure the virus of corruption, not speeches, not public proclamations.”
Cosatu further condemned President Cyril Ramaphosa and the government for how they’ve mishandled corruption. They said:
“He was soft on criminals who continue to occupy public office despite being implicated in financial mismanagement or theft of public funds.”
