Strand fire kills couple in Cape Town, 10-year-old son escapes

The Western Cape police confirmed the death of a man and a woman who got burnt in their home.

The three were inside when the fire broke out in Strand.


The police also confirmed that only their 10-year-old son managed to escape from the fire.

The indecent happened in the early hours of Monday.

The City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service in a statement said the Strand couple died on Monday morning while their son managed to escape.

According to Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse, they immediately responded to the call of the fire outbreak around 05:30 am.

“The City’s Fire and Rescue Service received an emergency call just after 05:30 to a formal dwelling alight in Vredenhof Street, Strand”.

Carelse said that the Strand fire crew was confronted with smoke emanating from the building when they arrived the scene.

“A 33-year-old female and a 49-year-old male were declared dead on the scene,” police spokesperson Mihlali Majikela said.

A chaplain was requested.

The cause of the fire is not known yet.

Police have registered a death inquest case for investigation.
